Like most committed and loving fathers, spending quality time the family is at the top of the agenda for Rafael Jovet-Ramos.  Busy lives filled with social and work commitments are the norm these days, but quality time spent with family is the greatest gift any parent can give to their child.

Get The Housework Done Together
Cooking, cleaning and laundry are essential to running a household, so why not involve kids in these activities?  Making a meal as a family can be incredibly bonding, especially when the activity culminates with a sit-down dinner.  Working as a team to pick up clutter and straighten bedroom can be made into a fun game; when the chores are done the family does a fun activity together.

Create A Weekly Evening Without Electronics
Banning electronics for just one evening a week is a great way to bond.  While this may initially create panic for all parties involved, those few hours of undistracted family time may just become the best part of the week.

Create A Family Game Night
With so many games to choose from, finding a game that the whole family can enjoy together is a no brainer.  From card games to classic game boards, the bonds and memories created by playing games together are priceless.

Rafael Jovet-Ramos – Representing the Gracie Barra Family in Spring Lake

Rafael Jovet-Ramos is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, educated in part through the Gracie Barra Association and a Head Instructor with Gracie Barra Spring Lake in North Carolina. Gracie Barra has more than 500 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools worldwide.

Approaching the art of Jiu-Jitsu as a lifelong journey, the Gracie Barra Foundation seeks to support students as they engage in a learning program that rewards their dedication and consistency. The program of study, developed by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Master Carlos Gracie Jr., was designed to help students in an organic progression from white belt to black belt.

The Gracie Barra Programs are focused on six different elements that include Curriculum, Pre-Requisite, Class, Minimum Attendance, Training Methods and Belt System. The goal of the program is to provide an environment and structure that encourages motivation, achievement and practice.

Students in Gracie Barra programs begin by learning the general Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu self-defense strategy, followed by the Gracie Barra Fundamentals Program. Once students learn the techniques, they continue to the advanced program. This typically occurs after four months of training. Once the training in the advanced program is fulfilled, the student can move on to the Gracie Barra Black Belt Program. In the black belt program, students develop their own unique style as they are introduced to more advanced techniques and strategies.

In addition to working as a head instructor at Gracie Barra Spring Lake, Rafael Jovet-Ramos is the Program Director for Rafael Family Mixed Martial Arts Academy and a self-defense instructor at Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Rafael Jovet-Ramos – Positive Impacts of Jiu-Jitsu

The martial art Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on grappling and joint manipulation, with the idea that a smaller person can defend themselves against a stronger and larger person with use of leverage and proper technique. Rafael Jovet-Ramos has been practicing and teaching Brazilian Jiu- and knows first-hand the positive impact the sport holds beyond its use in self-defense.

Builds Mental Strength

Fighting back when you are backed up against a wall takes both mental and physical strength. With Jiu-Jitsu, you learn to overcome the fear of facing someone more skilled or even bigger than yourself. The focus needed to go up against someone larger and stronger can only build mental strength and clarity.


Even those in peak physical shape will experience defeat as they first start grappling. Jiu-Jitsu focuses on technique. Smaller and even less fit people can use their skill to take down someone much larger or even in better shape. The experience is humbling and beginners bode well in remembering that feeling as they continue their journey in the practice.

Boosts Confidence

Gaining skills in Jiu-Jitsu translates into gaining confidence. As you learn and practice the skills that enable you to defend yourself and remain strong in a challenging position, confidence can only grow. Continued practice and refinement of techniques serves to boost confidence as well.

Rafael Jovet-Ramos – How to Stay Focused on the Important Things in Life

As a former operations chief in the United States Army, Rafael Jovet-Ramos understands that it can feel like a challenge being able to deliver despite endless calls, meetings, emails, and appointments. On many days, you can feel like you’ve spent the whole day attending to issues that don’t produce meaningful results.

While it’s common to feel like you’re juggling a lot on your plate, the distractions don’t have to impact your ability to be productive. You can tune your brain to handle distractions in a different way so that you can stay focused on the important things. Here’s how you do it.

No multitasking

Being able to multitask is good, but it has its disadvantage. When your focus is split between different issues, you are more likely to make a mistake, miss an important detail, or get upset over something you shouldn’t. Those who encourage multitasking point to the ability to get more done, but it takes a lot of effort and time to do so. You would rather focus on a task at a time and see it to completion.

Good time management

When you think about it, there’s probably a time in your day when you’re able to focus and everything seems to click. Some people get more done in the morning, others in the evening, while others prefer to work late nights. Take note of your preferred period and get as much done.

Switch off distractions

Is your phone a distraction? Switch it off. Is Facebook keeping you from completing that report? Close it. Practice switching off distractions, even if for an hour a day.

Rafael Jovet-Ramos – The Growth of the Fitness Industry

Over the past decade, America’s health and fitness industry has seen tremendous growth, despite some economic turmoil that affected businesses across the world. In 2013, Rafael Jovet-Ramos was part of the launch of Gracie Barra school in Spring Lake, NC, in part helping the community access a self-defense and fitness facility. Like many individuals running fitness facilities, he has helped provide employment to a staff of instructors while helping members learn new skills.

The growth of the fitness industry has been dynamic, and there’s room for more growth. Experts see the growth as a result of an increased need for many people to stay in shape and desire the unhealthy effect of weight gain. In order to meet this demand, gyms are adapting to the needs of their clients by providing sophisticated fitness options and programs that are driven by modern marketing campaigns.

For many of these fitness facilities, membership dues remain a major source of income. However, maintaining payments may not always be consistent, which is why fitness centers go the extra mile to make their programs as appealing as possible. Gone are the days when gyms just focused on weight lifting; now members can explore options like spinning class, Cross Fit, and training in martial arts disciplines like Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
